Dietrichstein
The Princely House of Dietrichstein descended
from an ancient noble family from Carinthia [9: 1910;
p.127].
Franz and Sigmund (+1533), sons of Pankraz of
Dietrichstein (+1508), founded, respectively, two major branches of the House of
Dietrichstein, Weichselstätt-Rabenstein and Hollenburg-Finkenstein [4: tome
III; chapitre VIII; t.97].
In July 1514, the Roman Emperor Maximilian
I, in his quality of Duke of Carinthia, granted the title of Baron of
Hollenburg, Finkenstein and Thalberg to Sigmund of Dietrichstein (+1533)
[20: p.107] [8: Band 1; p.231] [9: 1910; p.127].
Sigmund-Georg (+1593) and Adam (+1590), sons of
Baron Sigmund (+1533), founded, respectively, two sub-branches of the
Hollenburg-Finkenstein branch, Hollenburg and Nikolsburg / Mikulov [10: Band III
(1956); t.22] [4: tome III; chapitre VIII; t.97].
In Nov 1612, the Roman Emperor granted the
title of Imperial Count of Dietrichstein of Nikolsburg to Maximilian
(+1655), grandson of Baron Adam (+1590) from the Nikolsburg sub-branch [8: Band
1; p.231] [9: 1910; p.127].
In Mar 1631, the Roman Emperor granted the
title of Imperial Prince of Dietrichstein of Nikolsburg (primogeniture)
to Count Maximilian (+1655) [20: p.239] [8: Band 1; p.232] [9: 1910; p.127] (his
uncle, Cardinal Franz (+1636), was granted the title of Imperial Prince in 1624
[20: p.212f] [8: Band 1; p.231]).
In 1654, Ferdinand-Joseph (+1698), son of
Prince Maximilian (+1655) received an individual voice in the Council
of Princes of the Imperial Assembly and the Status of Imperial Estate
[9: 1910; p.127] [2: p.4].
In 1684, Prince Ferdinand-Joseph bought
Tarasp / Trasp from the House of Austria [4: tome III; chapitre VIII; t.97].
Tarasp was an Imperial immediate Lordship represented in the Assembly of
Imperial Circle of Austria (Note 1).
In 1803, by the Final Recess of the Imperial
Deputation, the Prince of Dietrichstein of Nikolsburg exchanged Tarasp for
Neu-Ravensburg [3: Abtheilung II; Band I; p.305] [4: tome III;
p.237].
In July 1806, by the Act of the
Confederation of the Rhine, the King of Württemberg mediatized, i.e.
put under his sovereignty Neu-Ravensburg, the Prince of Dietrichstein of
Nikolsburg’s Imperial immediate possession [7: p.102] [3:
Abtheilung II; Band II; p.183] [2: p.151] [4: tome III; p.237].
In 1864, with the death of Prince Moritz,
both the Nikolsburg sub-branch and the Hollenburg-Finkenstein branch of the
House of Dietrichstein became extinct in the male line [20: p.109] [4: tome III;
chapitre VIII; t.97]
In 1869, Count Alexander of Mensdorff-Pouilly
(+1871), who was married to Prince Joseph's daughter, received the title of
Prince of Dietrichstein of Nikolsburg [4: tome III; chapitre VIII;
t.97].
Notes.
1. In 1678, the Prince of Dietrichstein of
Nikolsburg mortgaged Tarasp [8: Band 1; p.232]. In 1686, the Prince was included
in the Imperial Registry (Matrikul) for Tarasp [1: Theil III (1771);
p.530]. Other sources ([3: Abtheilung II; Band I; p.305] [20: p.273] [4: tome
III; p.618]) mentioned 1686 as the year when the Prince of Dietrichstein of
Nikolsburg became the official owner of Tarasp.
List of the Rulers [20: p.304] 10: Band
III (1956); t.22] [4: tome III; chapitre VIII; t.97]
