Königsegg / Königseck

The House of Königsegg descended from the ancient noble family of Fronhofen in Swabia that by the 13th century had possessed the Imperial immediate Lordship of Königsegg, and by the 14th century had acquired the Imperial immediate Lordship of Aulendorf [10: Neue Folge; Band V (1988); t.46] [9: 1941: p.238] [4: tome III; p.412].

Ulrich and Eberhard (+ ca.1366), sons of Ulrich of Königsegg (+1313), founded two main branches of the family. The descendants of Eberhard (+ca.1366) moved to Prussia where they possessed Korschen, Schwallen, Romsdorf, Skandlack, etc, [10: Neue Folge; Band V (1988); t.48, 54-59]. This branch participated in no Imperial institutions.

The descendants of Ulrich remained in Swabia and inherited the family's possessions.

Ulrich the Younger (+1386/88) and Eberhard (+ ca.1377), sons of Ulrich of Königsegg, founded, respectively, the branches of Königsegg and Königseggerberg. The branch of Königseggerberg, which possessed Königseggerberg and Achberg, became extinct in the male line with the death of Hans-Dionys in 1545 [10: Neue Folge; Band V (1988); t.48].

In 1567, Johann-Jakob (+1567), Baron of Königsegg, husband of Countess Elisabeth of Montfort-Tettnang, received the Imperial immediate County of Rothenfels and the Lordship of Staufen [7: p.47] [10: Neue Folge; Band V (1988); t.47].

In July 1629, the Roman Emperor granted to the Barons of Königsegg the title of Count of Königsegg and Rothenfels, and elevated Königsegg to the status of County [8: Band 3; p.53] [9: 1941: p.238] [10: Neue Folge; Band V (1988); t.47].

Hugo / Haug (+1666) and Johann-Georg (+1666), sons of Baron Georg of Königsegg (+1622), founded, respectively, the branches of Rothenfels and Aulendorf [10: Neue Folge; Band V (1988); t.47].
