Leiningen-Westerburg

The House of Leiningen-Westerburg descended from the ancient Imperial immediate Lords of Runkel [10: Neue Folge; Band IV (1981); t.30] [4: tome III; p.416].

Siegfried / Sifrid IV (+1266) and Dietrich / Didier I, sons of Siegfried / Sifrid III, Lord of Runkel and Westerburg, founded two branches of the Runkel family [9: 1941: p.243]. Since 1454, the branch of Dietrich I ruled in the County of Wied, and became known as the House of Wied [10: Neue Folge; Band IV (1981); t.35].

Reinhard / Regnard III (+1449), Lord of Westerburg, from the branch of Siegfried IV (+1266), married Margareta (+1470), sister of Landgrave Hesso (+1467), the last male representative of the senior branch of the House of Leiningen. Reinhard / Regnard (+1522), grandson of Reinhard III (+1449) and Margareta, inherited some possessions of the House of Leiningen, and founded the House of Leiningen-Westerburg [10: Neue Folge; Band IV (1981); t.30-31] [3: Abtheilung I; Band I; p.345] [9: 1941: p.243].

Philipp (+1597) and Georg (+1586), sons of Count Kuno of Leiningen (+1547), and grandsons of Reinhard (+1522), founded two branches of the House of Leiningen-Westerburg.

The branch of Philipp (+1597), which possessed Leiningen, Grünstadt, Rixingen / Réchicourt-le-Château, Oberbronn, Forbach, etc., became extinct in the male line in 1705 with the death of Count Philipp-Ludwig [10: Neue Folge; Band IV (1981); t.31], and Leiningen, Grünstadt, etc. passed to the branch of Georg (+1586) [22: Band 2; p.305].

In 1705, Christoph-Christian (+1728) and Georg II Karl-Ludwig (+1726), sons of Count Georg-Wilhelm (+1695) from the branch of Georg (+1586), divided the family's possessions, and founded, respectively, the branches of Altleiningen and Neuleiningen of the Houses of Leiningen-Westerburg [9: 1941: p.243] [10: Neue Folge; Band IV (1981); t.32].
