Oettingen / Öttingen


The House of Oettingen descended from the ancient Swabian family that by the 12th century had possessed the Imperial immediate County of Oettingen [10: Neue Folge; Band XVI (1995); t.98] [9: 1944; p.253].

Ulrich (+1477) and Wilhelm I (+1467), sons of Count Friedrich of Oettingen (+1423), founded two branches of the House of Oettingen [10: Neue Folge; Band XVI (1995); t.99]. The branch of Ulrich (+1477) became extinct in the male line with the death of Count Martin in 1549 [4: tome III; chapitre VIII; t.150].

Ludwig XVI (+1569) and Friedrich (+1579), sons of Count Ludwig XV of Oettingen (+1557) from the branch of Wilhelm I (+1467), founded, respectively, the sub-branches of Oettingen and Wallerstein [4: tome III; chapitre VIII; t.150].

In Oct 1674, the Roman Emperor granted the title of Prince to Count Albrecht-Ernst I of Oettingen-Oettingen (+1683) [10: Neue Folge; Band XVI (1995); t.101] [4: tome III; chapitre VIII; t.150]. The branch of Oettingen-Oettingen became extinct in the male line with the death of Prince Albrecht-Ernst II in 1731 [3: Abtheilung I; Band I; p.262] [4: tome III; chapitre VIII; t.150], and its possessions passed to the branch of Wallerstein [7: p.52].

Wilhelm III (+1600), Wolfgang (+1598), and Ernst (+1626), sons of Count Wilhelm II of Oettingen-Wallerstein (+1602), founded, respectively, the sub-branches of Spielberg, Wallerstein and Baldern [4: tome III; chapitre VIII; t.150].

In July 1806, the King of Bavaria mediatized all of the Imperial immediate possessions of the House of Oettingen by the Act of the Confederation of the Rhine [2: p.96; 156] [7: p.111].




1. Spielberg

Wilhelm III (+1600), son of Count Wilhelm II of Oettingen-Wallerstein (+1602), founded the sub-branch of Spielberg [9: 1944; p.253].

In July 1734, the Roman Emperor granted the title of Prince (primogeniture) to Count Franz-Albrecht of Oettingen-Spielberg (+1737) [9: 1944; p.253] [10: Neue Folge; Band XVI (1995); t.102].

In Dec 1765, the Roman Emperor granted the title of Prince to all descendants of Prince Anton-Ernst-Joseph of Oettingen-Spielberg (+1768) [9: 1944; p.253] [10: Neue Folge; Band XVI (1995); t.103].

In 1781, the Prince of Oettingen-Spielberg took the title of "Prince of Oettingen-Oettingen and Oettingen-Spielberg" [9: 1944; p.253].

In 1803, the Final Recess of the Imperial Deputation gave the Prince of Oettingen-Spielberg an individual voice in the Council of Princes of the Imperial Assembly / Diet [5: tome I; p.323-324] [9: 1944; p.253].

In July 1806, the Prince of Oettingen-Spielberg lost the status of Imperial immediate ruler when his Imperial immediate possessions were mediatized by the Act of the Confederation of the Rhine [2: p.96; 156] [3: Abtheilung II; Band II; p.182].

2. Wallerstein

Wolfgang (+1598), son of Count Wilhelm II of Oettingen-Wallerstein (+1602), continued the branch of Wallerstein [9: 1944; p.254] [20: Jahrgang LXIV (1811); p.352].

In Mar 1774, the Roman Emperor granted the title of Prince to Count Kraft-Ernst of Oettingen-Wallerstein (+1802) [9: 1944; p.253] [10: Neue Folge; Band XVI (1995); t.106].

In 1781, the Prince of Oettingen-Spielberg took the title of "Prince of Oettingen-Oettingen and Oettingen-Wallerstein" [9: 1944; p.254].

Territorial Acquisitions and Losses since 1789

- In 1798, the Prince of Oettingen-Wallerstein inherited Baldern and Katzenstein after the extinction of the branch of Baldern [10: Neue Folge; Band XVI (1995); t.106] [7: p.52, 99] [2: p.67].

In 1799, the Baron of Syrgenstein sold the Imperial immediate Lordship of Altenberg (in the Imperial Knightly Circle of Swabia) to the Prince of Oettingen-Wallerstein [7: p.62].

- In 1803, the Final Recess of the Imperial Deputation compensated the Prince of Oettingen-Wallerstein for Dachstuhl with the territories of the secularized non-immediate monasteries of Heiligkreuz in Donauwörth, St. Mangus in Füssen, Deggingen, Maihing, and Kirchheim [4: tome III; p.375] [7: p.110]








3. Baldern +1798

Ernst (+1626), son of Count Wilhelm II of Oettingen-Wallerstein (+1602), founded the sub-branch of Baldern [4: tome III; chapitre VIII; t.150] [20: Jahrgang LXIV (1811); p.354]. Ernst's possessions included Baldern and Katzenstein [10: Neue Folge; Band XVI (1995); t.102].

In 1682, Count Notger-Wilhelm of Oettingen-Baldern (+1693), grandson of Ernst, married Maria-Sidonia of Sötern (+1691), heiress of the Imperial immediate Lordship of Dachstuhl [4: tome III; p.298] [10: Neue Folge; Band XVI (1995); t.108].

In 1798, the sub-branch of Baldern became extinct in the male line with the death of Count Franz-Wilhelm [20: Jahrgang LXIV (1811); p.354].

Note.
1. Philippine-Karoline (+1842), daughter of Count Joseph Anton of Oettingen-Wallerstein (+1778), was to succeed her father in the Imperial immediate Lordship of Dachstuhl. Philippine-Karoline's succession was challenged by her uncle, Franz-Wilhelm (+1798), and after his death (in 1798), by the Prince of Oettingen-Wallerstein. By the agreement of 1802, the rights to Dachstuhl, which was occupied by the French armies, passed to the Princes of Oettingen-Wallerstein who were compensated by the Final Recess of the Imperial Deputation (1803) with the territories of secularized monasteries. In 1794, Countess Philippine-Karoline of Oettingen-Wallerstein married Rudolf-Joseph (1776-1843), who succeeded as Prince of Colloredo-Mansfeld in 1807 [4: tome III; p.375].
"Hieran knüpfte nun der Vortragende Erläuterungen über den Erwerb der Herrschaft Dachstuhl durch das gräfliche Haus Öttingen Baldern und über den Erbschaftsstreit der Gräfin Philippine Karoline mit ihrem Onkel dem Grafen Franz Wilhelm von Baldern und nach des Letztem Tode mit dem Erben der Grafschaft Baldern dem Fürsten Kraft Ernst von Öttingen Wallerstein. Die genannte Gräfin welche sich 1794 mit dem Grafen Rudolf Joseph von Colloredo Mannsfeld vermählt hatte, schloß sch ießlich mit dem Fürsten Kraft Ernst am 3 Oktober 1802 einen Vertrag, der von Kaiser Franz II am 28 Oktober bestätigt wurde laut, dessen die Gräfin dem Fürsten die Herrschaft Dachstuhl samt Appertinenzien, unter welchen die dafür zu erhaltenden Entschädigungen begriffen waren gegen Entrichtung von 200 000 fl. abtrat."
