Castell

The House of Castell descended from the ancient Franconian Imperial immediate noble family that by the beginning of the 13th century had been known as the Counts of Castell [4: tome III; p.404] [10: Neue Folge; Band XVI (1995); t.123] [9: 1941; p.186].

Wolfgang II (+1631) and Gottfried (+1631), sons of Count Georg II of Castell (+1597), divided the family's possessions and founded, respectively, the branches of Remlingen and Rüdenhausen [10: Neue Folge; Band XVI (1995); t.125]; [4: tome III; chapitre VIII; t.164].

1. Remlingen

Wolfgang II (+1631), son of Count Georg II (+1597), founded the branch of Remlingen of the House of Castell. His possessions included Castell, Remlingen, etc.

Sons of Count Wolfgang-Dietrich (+1709), founded four sub-branches of the Remlingen branch. By 1772, Count Christian-Friedrich-Karl (+1773) from the Castell sub-branch had united all possessions of the Remlingen branch.

In 1773, Albrecht-Friedrich-Karl (+1810) and Christian-Friedrich (+1850), succeeded their father, Christian-Friedrich-Karl and ruled jointly [10: Neue Folge; Band XVI (1995); t.127].

In 1803, the Rüdenhausen branch of the House of Castell became extinct in the male line, and its possessions passed to the Counts of Castell-Remlingen [2: p.166].
Albrecht-Friedrich-Karl (+1810) and Christian-Friedrich (+1850), divided the family's possessions and founded, respectively, the sub-branches of Castell and New Rüdenhausen [10: Neue Folge; Band XVI (1995); t.127, 129]. Albrecht-Friedrich-Karl continued to rule in Castell and Remlingen, Christian-Friedrich (+1850), received Rüdenhausen.

In July 1806, the Count of Castell-Castell and the Count of Castell-Rüdenhausen lost their status of Imperial immediate ruler when their Imperial immediate possessions were mediatized by the Act of the Confederation of the Rhine [4: tome III; p.404].

In Mar 1901, the King of Bavaria granted the Count of Castell-Castell the title of Prince (primogeniture) [10: Neue Folge; Band XVI (1995); t.127] [9: 1941; p.186]. The same month, the King of Bavaria also granted the Count of Castell-Rüdenhausen the title of Prince (primogeniture) [10: Neue Folge; Band XVI (1995); t.129] [9: 1941; p.188].
